Cholesterol is a sticky, fat-like substance that is circulated in the blood. It is produced naturally by the liver but is also found in certain foods. While cholesterol is vital to the proper functioning of the body, health problems arise when there is too much of it in the blood.

Having an excessively high level of lipids in your blood (hyperlipidemia) can have an effect on your health. High cholesterol itself does not cause any symptoms, but it increases the risk of serious health conditions.

About cholesterol

Cholesterol is carried in the blood by proteins, and when the two combine they are called lipoproteins. There are harmful and protective lipoproteins known as LDL and HDL, or ‘bad’ and ‘good’ cholesterol.

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): LDL carries cholesterol from your liver to the cells that need it. If there is too much cholesterol for the cells to use, it can build up in the artery walls, leading to disease of the arteries. For this reason, LDL cholesterol is known as “bad cholesterol”.
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL): HDL carries cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver, where it is either broken down or passed out of the body as a waste product. For this reason, it is referred to as “good cholesterol” and higher levels are better.

The amount of cholesterol in the blood (both LDL and HDL) can be measured with a blood test. The recommended cholesterol levels in the blood vary between those with a higher or lower risk of developing arterial disease.

Why should we aim to lower cholesterol?

Evidence strongly indicates that high cholesterol can increase the risk of:

  • narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • mini-stroke (TIA)

This is because cholesterol can build up in the artery wall, restricting the flow of blood to the heart, brain and the rest of the body. It also increases the chance of a blood clot developing somewhere.

The risk of coronary heart disease (when the heart’s blood supply is blocked or disrupted) also rises as the blood’s cholesterol level increases and this can cause pain in the front of the chest or arm (angina) during stress or physical activity.

What causes high cholesterol?

There are a number of factors that can cause high cholesterol. Some of these factors are fixed and out of our control, such as age or genetics, while others are completely preventable, such as an unhealthy diet, a lack of physical exercise and smoking.

There are many factors that can increase chances of having heart problems or a stroke as a result of high cholesterol, including the following:

  • an unhealthy diet: some foods already contain cholesterol (known as dietary cholesterol) but it is the amount of saturated fat in diets that is more important
  • smoking: a chemical found in cigarettes called acrolein stops HDL transporting fatty deposits to the liver, leading to narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • having diabetes or high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • having a family history of stroke or heart disease

How to lower cholesterol levels

The first step to reducing cholesterol is to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. It is important to have a diet low in fatty food. Try swapping food containing saturated fat for fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals. This will also help to prevent high cholesterol from returning.

Making a few small changes to one’s lifestyle can have a big impact on your cholesterol level. Cutting out foods that are high in saturated fat, taking part in more exercise, reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking are all sure-fire ways to bring cholesterol level back down to a healthier amount.

Aiming to produce a set of independent, practical recommendations for a better understanding of colic, its symptoms and remedies, Central Medical Supplies commissioned a survey to be undertaken by Consumer Analysis Ltd. In May 2010, 1000 respondents across 12 U.K. regions were surveyed and the key findings were:

  • Almost half of all babies in the U.K. develop colic. 40% of mums with small babies are sure their babies have or have had colic, while a further 7% of mums are unsure whether some symptoms might have been colic
  • Only two out of five mothers with young babies (42%) could correctly name one or more

    of the symptoms of colic

  • According to mums in the survey, the most well known sign of colic is the baby’s legs curling up to their stomach (26%), followed by long periods of crying (23%)
  • 46% of mums feel concerned about giving medicine to small babies and 28% think that other methods should be tried before medicine
  • A minuscule 15% of babies who used Dr Brown’s Natural Flow in their early months developed colic, a significantly smaller amount than the competitor’s bottles
  • Strangely, 28% of babies developed colic while being fully breast fed, more than those using Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Bottles
  • Colic lead 62% of mothers to be frustrated that they couldn’t solve the problem, 29% felt that the crying caused a lot of stress in the household and a fifth (20%) felt guilty because they thought that they were doing something wrong
  • Concerned mothers were more likely to turn to their health visitor than their mum for advice about their colicky baby (47% vs. 29%)
  • The most common treatment for colic used by the mums in the survey were anti-colic medicines (61%), followed

    by using massage (32%) and changing the baby’s bottle (28%)

The Government recommends that all children between six months and five years should have a vitamin supplement that contains vitamins A, C and D. Although the deficiency can occur at any age, it is more likely during periods of rapid growth, making childhood a key time to ensure levels are boosted.
