Cholesterol is a sticky, fat-like substance that is circulated in the blood. It is produced naturally by the liver but is also found in certain foods. While cholesterol is vital to the proper functioning of the body, health problems arise when there is too much of it in the blood.

Having an excessively high level of lipids in your blood (hyperlipidemia) can have an effect on your health. High cholesterol itself does not cause any symptoms, but it increases the risk of serious health conditions.

About cholesterol

Cholesterol is carried in the blood by proteins, and when the two combine they are called lipoproteins. There are harmful and protective lipoproteins known as LDL and HDL, or ‘bad’ and ‘good’ cholesterol.

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): LDL carries cholesterol from your liver to the cells that need it. If there is too much cholesterol for the cells to use, it can build up in the artery walls, leading to disease of the arteries. For this reason, LDL cholesterol is known as “bad cholesterol”.
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL): HDL carries cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver, where it is either broken down or passed out of the body as a waste product. For this reason, it is referred to as “good cholesterol” and higher levels are better.

The amount of cholesterol in the blood (both LDL and HDL) can be measured with a blood test. The recommended cholesterol levels in the blood vary between those with a higher or lower risk of developing arterial disease.

Why should we aim to lower cholesterol?

Evidence strongly indicates that high cholesterol can increase the risk of:

  • narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • mini-stroke (TIA)

This is because cholesterol can build up in the artery wall, restricting the flow of blood to the heart, brain and the rest of the body. It also increases the chance of a blood clot developing somewhere.

The risk of coronary heart disease (when the heart’s blood supply is blocked or disrupted) also rises as the blood’s cholesterol level increases and this can cause pain in the front of the chest or arm (angina) during stress or physical activity.

What causes high cholesterol?

There are a number of factors that can cause high cholesterol. Some of these factors are fixed and out of our control, such as age or genetics, while others are completely preventable, such as an unhealthy diet, a lack of physical exercise and smoking.

There are many factors that can increase chances of having heart problems or a stroke as a result of high cholesterol, including the following:

  • an unhealthy diet: some foods already contain cholesterol (known as dietary cholesterol) but it is the amount of saturated fat in diets that is more important
  • smoking: a chemical found in cigarettes called acrolein stops HDL transporting fatty deposits to the liver, leading to narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • having diabetes or high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • having a family history of stroke or heart disease

How to lower cholesterol levels

The first step to reducing cholesterol is to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. It is important to have a diet low in fatty food. Try swapping food containing saturated fat for fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals. This will also help to prevent high cholesterol from returning.

Making a few small changes to one’s lifestyle can have a big impact on your cholesterol level. Cutting out foods that are high in saturated fat, taking part in more exercise, reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking are all sure-fire ways to bring cholesterol level back down to a healthier amount.

Combating cholesterol levels with Forza

Now that we’re clear on cholesterol, let us introduce to you the new brand category of food supplements from Forza designed to promote heart health and encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles through exercise, education and diet.

Cholesterin is a plant-based food supplement that helps to actively lower cholesterol levels in the blood and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. A natural product that contains only one ingredient: plant sterols. Plant sterols have been scientifically proven to lower cholesterol levels. In addition, Cholesterin produces no negative side effects and can be taken alongside cholesterol-lowering medications, including statins.

Suitable for vegetarians, recommended dosage requires two capsules in the morning with breakfast and two in the evening with dinner.

As awareness around cholesterol levels continues to be raised, those embarking on a new lifestyle be it voluntarily or on their GP’s recommendation, will no doubt be looking for a helping hand.

Aiming to produce a set of independent, practical recommendations for a better understanding of colic, its symptoms and remedies, Central Medical Supplies commissioned a survey to be undertaken by Consumer Analysis Ltd. In May 2010, 1000 respondents across 12 U.K. regions were surveyed and the key findings were:

  • Almost half of all babies in the U.K. develop colic. 40% of mums with small babies are sure their babies have or have had colic, while a further 7% of mums are unsure whether some symptoms might have been colic
  • Only two out of five mothers with young babies (42%) could correctly name one or more

    of the symptoms of colic

  • According to mums in the survey, the most well known sign of colic is the baby’s legs curling up to their stomach (26%), followed by long periods of crying (23%)
  • 46% of mums feel concerned about giving medicine to small babies and 28% think that other methods should be tried before medicine
  • A minuscule 15% of babies who used Dr Brown’s Natural Flow in their early months developed colic, a significantly smaller amount than the competitor’s bottles
  • Strangely, 28% of babies developed colic while being fully breast fed, more than those using Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Bottles
  • Colic lead 62% of mothers to be frustrated that they couldn’t solve the problem, 29% felt that the crying caused a lot of stress in the household and a fifth (20%) felt guilty because they thought that they were doing something wrong
  • Concerned mothers were more likely to turn to their health visitor than their mum for advice about their colicky baby (47% vs. 29%)
  • The most common treatment for colic used by the mums in the survey were anti-colic medicines (61%), followed

by using massage (32%) and changing the baby’s bottle (28%)

  • Dr Brown’s was the first choice (43%) for mums changing their baby’s bottle to relieve the symptoms of colic
  • Three quarters of babies with colic (75%) whose mums changed to Dr Brown’s Natural Flow saw improvement in their colicky symptoms after their bottles were changed
  • Over half (53%) of those changing to Dr Brown’s Natural Flow saw an improvement in three feeds or less, outperforming other brands
  • 36% of Dr Brown’s Natural Flow users noted a distinct change for the better after just one feed
  • On average it took 5.4 feeds for mums using Dr Brown’s to see an improvement in their babies’ colic symptoms, the shortest time of all bottles

The Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Bottle and Teat ranges are now available here at Murrays Health & Beauty.

The Government recommends that all children between six months and five years should have a vitamin supplement that contains vitamins A, C and D. One of the main reasons for giving a child a vitamin supplement is that it can often be difficult to persuade them to eat a healthy, balanced diet no matter how much parents try. This may be especially hard if they are going through a fussy eating phase.

Vitamin A is important because it supports vision in dim light, and maintains healthy skin. Vitamin D is key for good bone health. Meanwhile, both vitamins support the immune system – something that is extremely important when a child reaches nursery or school age. Unless a child eats well all of the time, it is possible that they may not get enough vitamin A, whilst it can be tricky to obtain enough vitamin D from food alone.

Official figures show that 4,638 children admitted to hospital in 2013/14 were found to be suffering a vitamin D deficiency, compared with 1,398 cases in 2009/10. Experts have suggested that the lack of vitamin D in children is likely to be linked to increasingly indoor lifestyles, with children spending too much time on computers and gaming consoles during the summer, rendering them with dangerously low levels of stored vitamin D when the winter arrives. Although the deficiency can occur at any age, it is more likely during periods of rapid growth, making childhood a key time to ensure levels are boosted.

This is where parents should look to supplements. New to Murrays Health & Beauty, Jelly Bears Vegetarian Vitamin Fruit Bear Gummies are developed especially for children to provide essential nutrients to help promote health and development in early years.

Available in three different varieties, ‘Omega 3 + Multivitamins’, ‘Multivitamins’, and ‘Zinc + Multivitamins’, Jelly Bears are made from plant derivative pectin, as opposed to the animal derivative gelatin. Free from a number of ingredients that mean children are getting goodness without any bad, Jelly Bears are gelatin free, gluten free, contain no artificial colours or hydrogenated fats, no nuts

or wheat, and are 100% natural. They come packaged in an adorable and reusable teddy bear pot. The suggested intake is for children aged 3 years and older to take 1 to 2 bears daily, with 50 bears per pot.

As our roster of baby brands continues to expand here at Murrays Health & Beauty, we’re excited to welcome Haberman on board. Dedicated to bringing to market innovative baby and toddler feeding products that help youngsters develop feeding independence, Haberman’s products have thought of and found a solution for a number of the problems parents encounter when both bottle and breast feeding.

For over 30 years, Haberman has been shaping the future of feeding, working with consumers, paediatricians and dental experts, to support both child and parent well-being, promoting a person-centred approach to feeding care that recognises the differences in family situations. Responsible for the Haberman Feeder, one of the only baby bottles supplied and endorsed by healthcare professionals around the world, the Haberman valve revolutionised the infant drinking industry.

Here we take a look at the product for which the Haberman brand has become synonymous with, the anywayup® cup.

Inspiration for what would go on to be one of the brand’s best-loved products came when Creative Director & Founder Mandy Haberman observed a toddler spill blackcurrant juice all over a friend’s carpet. Mandy set about inventing the valve that would feature in the first totally non-drip toddler trainer cup (also known as a ‘sippy cup’), that sealed between sips. In 1993, the first anywayup® cup featuring the Haberman valve was made. A product that would go on to revolutionise the feeding products market, the anywayup® cup remains the best and most popular non-spill cup in the world.

The Haberman anywayup® Cow Cup is a training cup with a snap-on lid and spout that lets children drink without spilling. Full of character (they are more often than not asked for by name) and designed with purpose, the anywayup® Cow Cup aids development, allowing baby to have great fun learning to feed independently. They are strong, easy to clean, are tooled and manufactured in the EU using the best materials, and tested to the highest standard. They are also BPA free.

Designed for babies aged 6 months+ who are starting to drink independently, the easy-to-grip handles make the anywayup® Cow Cup manageable for little hands. Perfect for babies who are at weaning stage and making the transition from nursing or bottle-feeding to a regular cup as they improve hand-to-mouth coordination, the anywayup® Cow Cup encourages sipping, not guzzling, whilst the rigid and shaped spout helps to deliver liquid past the teeth.

Haberman’s anywayup® Cow Cup helps a child to develop so they so they can enjoy learning to drink independently. When a baby has the motor skills to handle a cup but not the skills to keep a drink from spilling, anywayup® Cow Cups will provide independence while cutting down on the cleaning up!

HMCC01 – Haberman anywayup® Cow Cup – SRP £4.95/€6.60

Not content with capturing both parents and babies’ imagination with just one fun character cup, the anywayup® Bird Cup comes in three bright and cheerful colour options and again delivers results when it comes to independent drinking.

The anywayup® Bird Cups are colourful, characterful, and are available in a trio of bright shades – green, raspberry and blue – so have immediate tot appeal, but are also designed with parents in mind. Featuring the new improved and fully integrated Haberman leak-proof valve, they provide all the thrills with none of the spills.

Not only do they eliminate spillage, but the design also protects growing teeth by allowing a flow of juice only when the child sucks and swallows. Add this to their eye-catching bird shape in contemporary colours and you have the ultimate must-have weaning product.

The Haberman anywayup® Bird Cup is a training cup (also known as a sippy cup) with a twist on lid. As with the anywayup® Cow Cup, they are strong, easy to clean and BPA free.

Over 40 million non-spill cups and beakers featuring the technology used in the anywayup® Bird Cup are sold worldwide every year and here at Murrays Health & Beauty, we can certainly see why.

A new category for Murrays Health & Beauty, our expanding Nutrition and Supplement sector welcomes Forza to the fold.

When established in 2007, the Forza brand was the sole manufacturer and supplier of its pioneering T5 formula, which quickly went on to become one of the UK’s most popular slimming solutions. Since then, Forza’s rapid evolution has been very well documented, and the now-famous range has expanded beyond expectations.

The fast-moving Forza brand is now an industry leader. Despite having branched out into new markets, Forza owes its success to the ground-breaking weight loss formula that changed the face of the supplement industry with all of their high-quality diet pills now being stocked and sold by many different U.K. retailers. Let us introduce to you the two lines we are launching with below.

FZHLPERK2 – Forza Raspberry K2 Supplements – SRP £21.99/€29.30

Raspberry K2 is a fruit and vitamin diet supplement that is made up of just four simple ingredients: raspberry, caffeine, resveratrol and vitamin K2.

The raspberry is a member of the rose family and is filled with many important antioxidants. Forza’s premium formula uses a natural fruit extract that has been taken from only the freshest and sweetest red raspberries.

Caffeine is the most widely consumed stimulant in the world and is used to help improve memory, concentration, physical endurance and exercise performance. Each of Forza’s Rasperry K2 capsules contains 200mg (the equivalent of two cups of coffee).

Resveratrol is an antioxidant usually found in grape skins and is the reason why some doctors recommend drinking a glass of red wine a day. It is one of the most widely studied plant compounds in the world and international conferences regularly take place to raise awareness of its potential anti-aging properties.

Vitamin K2 is arguably the most interesting vitamin of this decade. The high level of bone support offered by the vitamin makes Raspberry K2 the perfect diet supplement for women over, or approaching the age of 30.

Recommended dosage is two capsules in the morning with breakfast followed by one capsule in the afternoon with lunch. Those who are sensitive to caffeine should start with just one capsule per day.

With endorsements from a string of celebrities and reams of press coverage, Forza’s Raspberry K2

is fast becoming a go-to product for those looking  to achieve healthy and sustained weight loss, achieving the accolade of  the ‘UK’s Bestselling Weight Management Supplement of 2014.

Alongside Raspberry K2, Forza have harboured the beneficial qualities of the Green Coffee Bean for their Green Coffee 2:2:1 Supplement combining the powerful antioxidant blend from compounds found in the coffee bean, along with a special energy blend and resveratrol.

FZHLPEGC – Forza Green Coffee 2:2:1 Supplements – SRP £21.99/€29.30

The beneficial weight loss effects of the raw and unroasted green coffee bean can be attributed to Chlorogenic Acid, a slimming and health-promoting substance that reduces body fat percentage, reduces blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol and exerts an anti-diabetic effect.

Before it is harvested and roasted to bring out the dark colours, rich aromas and bold flavours that it is famous for, all coffee starts life as a little green bean. While most green coffee extracts provide between 20-40% of Chlorogenic Acid, this formula uses a high quality extract that contains a mighty 50% of the antioxidant substance. Helping the body to absorb less fat, meaning more fat is digested as opposed to being stored, a key component to this supplements formula works alongside other ingredients that boost metabolism whilst reducing the urge to eat unnecessarily.

In addition to being a rich source of Chlorogenic Acid,  Green Coffee 2:2:1 contains Forza’s DynamoBlend, which has been specially formulated to stimulate energy, improve mental performance and increase physical endurance. This blend contains Caffeine, Beta-Alanine and Methycobalamin, the most potent form of Vitamin B12.

As with many caffeine based products, users are advised to take one capsule a day for the first week to assess their individual tolerance. Individual results with all Forza products will vary between users.

Forza is available online now at Murrays Health & Beauty.  See the full range here >

Mobile connected health devices, such as blood pressure monitors and personal weighing scales are showing a strong increase in sales in European countries, despite still being a minority market. Aiding communication not only between doctors, patients, healthcare professionals and families, but also with the providers of healthcare services, treatment facilities and other service providers such as medical insurance companies, the mobile health market encourages these important developments.

According to market data from GfK*, the number of mobile-connected blood pressure monitors purchased last year rose by 42% across Great Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands, compared to 2012, while connected personal weighing scales rose by an enormous 88%.

A market that offers significant opportunities, with 2014 being the year of ‘mobile health’ as well as wearable technology devices, the popular media buzz around these topics is likely to have a positive effect on consumers’ awareness of the potential benefits on offer.

Consumers today expect to receive immediate answers and information simply by running a quick check through their smartphone or tablet. This encompasses not only their personal health condition, but their activity levels also. With smartphones continuing to play an increasingly important role in the mobile health market, medical apps were downloaded some 44 million times in 2012, with this figure set to rise to nearer 142 million in 2016.

With the Medisana VitaDock at the forefront of the development of medical sensors, blood glucose, body temperature, body weight, blood pressure and pulse rates can be monitored simply and conveniently on the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using the app, VitaDock. Managing one’s health on a computer certainly sounds like a visionary idea from the future, but with Medisana, this forward-thinking vision has become a reality with the VitaDock Online.

So how exactly does the VitaDock Online work?

VitaDock Online is a free online portal developed by Medisana to save, retrieve, evaluate and export an individual’s vital signs. In this portal, blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and body temperature values can be saved separate to the measurement device and viewed online in the form of statistics and tables – data that the user can retrieve worldwide and at any time.

It goes without saying that personal data is protected using the highest of standards. However, data can also be shared with other people such as relatives, physicians, a personal trainer or healthcare centre, if desired. This can be done in electronic form, sending the data via email, or in the traditional print form for the next visit to the doctors.

With the help of the VitaDock Platform, personal vital data such as weight, blood sugar, blood pressure or temperature can be visualised and evaluated professionally: easy-to-read tables show any changes and allow for a closer look at an individual health. Further statistics analyse the data over time and show trends.

Another plus: VitaDock® Online also lets users synchronise their own saved data with an iOS or android device using the VitaDock® App. Synchronisation is also possible between several devices. If data gets lost – such as when the iOS or android device is mislaid or the data is deleted by accident – all data saved in the portal can be recovered at any time without problem. The VitaDock® Online Platform was developed in close cooperation with leading telemedicine experts.

VitaDock® Online is already compatible with the following Medisana products:

All VitaDock® products that can be connected to an iPhone, iPod Touch or an iPad.

a) ThermoDock®: Infrared thermometer module to reliably measure body temperature

b) GlucoDock®: Blood sugar monitor module, including a starter set for professional diabetes management

c) CardioDock®: Latest generation blood pressure monitor module for measurements using an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad

d) TargetScale®Body analysis scale with target function for the precise measurement of weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat and water as well as muscle and bone mass

VitaDock® Online of Medisana is the first ‘Cloud Solution’  for health in which one can store, sync and share the most important health data. VitaDock® Online is already prepared for the health monitoring needs of the future:

  • Central storage of all vital data without memory limit – values can be saved over the years
  • Password-protected data is available worldwide from any internet-accessible device
  • Easy forwarding or printing of statistics and tables for one’s doctors and caregivers
  • Export functions in different formats, for example as an Excel file
  • Easy recovery of data (backup in the event of data loss)
  • Sychronization of data between multiple iOS/Android devices

For individual product information on all Medisana lines including those compatible with VitaDock, see our Medisana collection in full here. Here you will also find a link to the Medisana Help Centre where you can find Frequently Asked Questions and Video Tutorials.

New this week to Murrays Health & Beauty, we’re excited to introduce Baylis & Harding’s latest hand wash offerings. The fastest growing hand wash manufacturer, Baylis & Harding dominates this busy category with wider distribution and more loyal customers year on year. Out-performing long-established brands thanks to their innovative approach and affordable luxury ethos, the most recent additions to their existing soap staples are here.

Left to Right: BHBMABHW – Baylis & Harding Jasmine & Apple Blossom Antibacterial Hand Wash 500ml – SRP £1.99; BHBM50FTHW – Baylis & Harding Fairtrade Hydrating Honey Hand Wash 500ml – SRP £2.49

Having recently conducted a survey of 1,800 shoppers, Baylis & Harding have established a greater understanding of their customer’s purchasing habits and possible lost opportunities within the marketplace. We all know that customers love to have a bottle of Baylis & Harding hand wash in their bathrooms, but with its luxurious packaging and sensuous fragrances, shoppers revealed that they like to use Baylis & Harding to impress guests, with a downstairs cloakroom proving a popular place to

have the products also. The results below for the following question proved equally insightful as Baylis & Harding look to expand their hand wash range to further meet customer needs.

“Think about the brands that you purchase most frequently, please indicate where in the home you tend to use them?”

A handy breakdown that shows the kitchen as a place where Baylis & Harding’s soaps aren’t so readily used, shoppers revealed that they wanted to use the brand there, but that Antibacterial qualities were high on their shopping list as key buying criteria.

So, following customer demand, we are excited to introduce Baylis & Harding’s NEW Jasmine & Apple Blossom Antibacterial Luxury Hand Wash, the very first Baylis & Harding soap of its kind and one that we’re confident will be a bestseller. With a clean and refreshing scent with top notes of Apple and Mandarin, Floral Jasmine, Violet and Musk, the soap neutralises odours whilst killing 99.9% of bacteria – perfect for using when preparing and serving food in the kitchen. And, whilst many antibacterial soaps can prove drying, the Jasmine & Apple Blossom Antibacterial Soap from Baylis & Harding contains lashing of moisturisers and silk protein to preserve the skin’s natural moisture levels.

Last, but by no means least, we introduce Baylis & Harding’s NEW Fairtrade Hydrating Honey Hand Wash. With Vitamin E and Almond extract, this soap boasts a gorgeous honey and almond fragrance and qualities that gently cleanse skin to leave it soft and nourished. In a luxuriously packaged 500ml bottle, this soap really does last for a long time, making it a cost friendly option without compromising on quality.
